Another flash memory format!

Are you ready for yet another flash memory card format? No? Too bad, Pretec wants to add C-Flash to the already way, way too long list of flash memory card formats we have to worry about.

Anyway, besides being incredibly easy to lose (it’s about 1/3 the volume of a miniSD card, or roughly the same size as a TransFlash card), and having a name that might potentially annoy the people over at the CompactFlash Association, C-Flash is said to have a speedy transfer rate of 120MB/s and a potential storage capacity of up to 2048GB (though obviously it’ll take them ages to get there). 1GB C-Flash cards should be ready in a few months, with the first cellphones with C-Flash card slots showing up as early as the third quarter of this year (though it doesn’t sound like any of the biggies like Samsung or Motorola or Nokia are even considering the format).

P.S. In case you’re keeping score at home, C-Flash will be joining the ranks of SD, miniSD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, TransFlash, xd-PictureCard, the USB Flash Card, MMC, RS-MMC, MMCmicro, SmartMedia, and probably a few others we’ve forgotten/surpressed.
